This little desert town is mainly known as the gateway to Sossusvlei and the Namib-Naukluft Park. Sesriem offers a petrol station shops hotels and a campsite. Permits to Sossusvlei and the Namib-Naukluft Park are sold in the office complex in the town and hot air balloon rides depart by the gate to Sossusvlei.
Access to Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei is open from sunrise to sunset. From the Sesriem Gate you will travel 60 km on a surfaced road until you get to the Sossusvlei parking lot. If you have a 4×4 you can drive the remaining 5 km in deep sand or take the shuttle. The ambitious can also hike to the dunes.
Four kilometres south of town lies the only permanent water source in the area. Sesriem Canyon is 30-40 metres deep and a kilometre in length. The canyon and the town get its name from a time when early settlers had to tie together six belts ses riem to scoop water from the bottom of the canyon.
